The L-system you have sounds like it should work out, don't quite understand how you could mistake which keyboard went to which computer.
I used to have separate setups, 2 desks, 2 chairs, 2 computers, set side-by-side along the wall, and just rolled my chair back and forth when necessary, or got up and moved over. The printers and scannner were on 2 drawer-high file cabinet in between them (you could also use a small table in the middle). I also had a credenza behind me, for laying out papers, tapes, etc. The side by side configuration worked better for me as far as stringing all the cables and wires, with the shared equipment in the middle. Let's see if I can draw something here, maybe 4' desk/table, 2' files, 4' desk/table.
