Back to transcription ratio

I am in the process of transcribing tapes of group interviews. Thirty minutes of transcription results in about 20 pages, single spaced, except between speakers. These tapes are taking me for a full 60-minute tape, about 8 hours. Am I retarded????

I am hearing from you people that the ratio is 1:3 or 1:4. How can that possibly be? The speakers in my tapes are not the greatest and there is quite a bit of rambling and some mumbling, but they are not horrible.

I have completed 4 tapes, not all of them full, and I've already spent about 24 hours transcribing! That does not include printing and proofreading. I still have 13 more tapes to do. At the rate I'm going, I will have to charge this person an arm and a leg. Is it fair to charge him by the hour, when I'm obviously so slow?

PLEASE let me hear your thoughts about my problem as quickly as you can.
