I think everyone's been extra busy lately - postings have slacked off.
Welcome and congrats on the new arrival-to-be.
It took me numerous YEARS between when I thought of doing this work until I finally jumped in. Was tough to give up that steady paycheck. But, finally it got tougher to see my daughters growing up @ daycare.
I jumped in and have acquired equipment/software as I went along and as project(s) warranted. I've been very blessed along the way. One client found it cheaper to buy me a fax and copier for my office then to keep paying charges for me to go elsewhere and for her to keep running over to see proofs of work. And, 10 years later I'm {knock on wood} still milking this equipment for just one more copy/fax. Another client had mucho-mucho pictures to scan and thereby I financed my purchase of a scanner.
As far as the transcriber - my suggestion would be micro-cassette. But first, look to see what you might be able to find used. I have a micro-cassette transcriber from when a friend's office closed down, and a standard cassette transcriber from an insurance office which no longer used it. Cost for both = $0.
Best of luck!
