I've never done this myself, but I understand there is an inexpensive cable you can get - possibly at Radio Shack - to run between your VCR and tape recorder to record the audio portion of the tape. The cable can give a better sound quality than using a microphone.
Consider charging an additional fee to the client to make the tape for transcribing - explaining that this will probably save the client money in the long-run since you are not equipped with transcription machine for video tapes. (Maybe even offer to provide them with the finished audio tape.)
