: I have an email in to Brenner's to hopefully clarify the difference between the Production Standards and Pricing Guide.

Let me know what you find out. I'd be interested in their standards and pricing guide as well.

: Does it detail costs for jobs such as stuffing, stamping & sealing envelopes manually?

No, only database entries and letter merge.

: One reason I'm interested in these guides is to have better information toward what is fair to pay sub-contractors.

I didn't find anything in there related to sub-contractors, but since I think their estimates are a bit high, I would say that it would cover what you would pay sub-contractors.

: Thanks for your info Susan.

You're very welcome.

: p.s. Are you an ABSSI member? If so, do you believe it's worth the cost?

No, I still haven't joined. I really don't think I would take advantage of any of the benefits they offer, although their Industry Focus Newsletter might be worth it for $48 per year. If you do join, the newsletter is included in the membership.

I forgot to mention that when I received my IPS guide last year, they included a free issue of Industry Focus (December 1999) which contained a Fall 1998 Pricing Survey which shows hourly rates for the most popular services by their members. It's interesting information, but may not be a very accurate means of determining hourly rates since I believe rates depend on regions. Some of their rates are close to mine, although most are higher. With the WWW making it more possible to be global, it may not be a bad guide to follow. Some examples: WP was tied between $20-$25 per hour, Enhanced range between $25-$35 per hour. Proofreading between $20-30, Dbase entry .05 per field, General Transcription $25 per hour, Medical Transcription .15-.16 per line, Writing $20-$40, Copyediting $25-$30, Bookkeeping $25-$35 per hour, Spreadsheet $25-$35, DP $30-$40, Graphic Design $35-$40, Web Site Design $35-$50, OCR $1-$5 per page or $10-$28 per hour, Internet Research $20-$30 per hour.

This was Fall 1998, so I imagine these rates would have increased somewhat. I may even consider raising some of my rates.

Susan
